VISION STATEMENT
To make the university of Benin  Students Guidance and counselling Centre a leading centre for the resolution of students’ problems in Nigeria.

The university of Benin  Student Guidance and counselling  Centre’s vision is the fostering and promotion of competencies (in their areas of interests) so that consequent upon students graduation they  will join the labour market optimally equipped with employable and marketable skills.

MISSION STATEMENT
To make the Students Guidance and counselling a leading centre where information, knowledge, preventive guidance,  practical work, training and support are  provided to the  students to prepare them for productive lives when they graduate.

To initiate through Guidance and Counselling activities a generation of well nurtured responsible and proactive/committed  Nigerian citizens
 

OBJECTIVES
The Students Guidance and counselling Centre will provide services that will  aim  at assisting people to maximize their overall growth, academic and personal-social problems, and challenges for all round development.
Assisting the students to identify and recognize their interest, values, abilities and capacities, skills and positive personality traits and to match these with their chosen careers.

Equipping  students with knowledge, values, experiences e.t.c  and prepare them for the world of work or self-employment.
Equipment, promoting and developing training programmes which will enhance Student’s employment ability.
Training students to be effective and skillful through entrepreneurship training

Providing student’s with relevant job information and bridging the gap between them and the job market.
To develop ways  of improving communication and feedback with stakeholders namely, students, staff (academic and non-academic) Deans of faculties, Head of Departements, Dean of Students Affairs, Director  of Medical Health services and Chairman students Disciplinary Communities, e.t.c.

Organizing training workshops and seminars on career  and  occupational information, study habits, personal-social taits e.t.c.

Organized students/parents and communities forum and dialogue with themBecoming a model Students Guidance and counselling centre for other centres to emulate.
The counselling centre need to plan and coordinate Guidance oriented activities to meet the needs  of the students.The professional Guidance cousnellor shall carry out the following functions or duties to the students.

FUNCTIONS OF STUDENTS GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING CENTRE
The counselling centre need to plan and coordinate Guidance oriented activities to meet the needs  of the students.

The professional Guidance cousnellor shall carry out the following functions or duties to the students.
The counsellor is to aid the students in self evaluation, self-understanding and self– direction that will enable the students take decisions consistent with immediate and long-range goals.
The counsellor will assist the students in developing healthy habits, positive attitudes and values.

The counsellor will help the students in acquiring a better understanding of the world of work.
The counsellor will assist the students in understanding his strengths, weaknesses, interests, values, potentialities and limitations.

The counsellor should hold periodic meetings with parents/guardians about students growth and development
The counsellor should make discrete and professional use of information shared during the meetings and interprete pertinent data about the counsellees academic records and progress.

The counsellor will act as a co-ordinator in the university programme of students appraisal, by accumulating meaningful information and interpreting this to all the stakeholders.

The Centre should plan activities to meet the growing needs of students in the university, such as:

  • Enhancing study skills of the students
  • Attaining individuality
  • Enhancing entrepreneurship
  • Developing a concept of values and desirable behaviours
  • Making plans for future living and working
  • Establishing personal relationship with individuals of both sexes
  • Learning to attain adult status by making vocational plans, family, social relationships and citizenship plans.
  • Combating unrest in the university
  • Fighting against decline in morality and teaching work ethics and habits
