Institute of Education

The Institute of Education of the University of Benin was established in 1977 as an integral part of the University’s Faculty of Education. It occupies a portion of the Ekehuan Road Campus of the University. The Institute seized to be part of the Faculty of Education from the 1991/92 academic year, at the commencement of the now defunct collegiate system.
The objectives of the Institute as approved by Senate of the University include the up-dating of the competence of Teachers through the agency of special programmes and the provision of the other forms of services to the community at large. The first aspect of its functions consist of courses of study leading to the award of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), Post-Graduate Diploma in Technical Education (PGDTED), Diploma programmes in Mathematics Education, School Health, Physical Education, Early Childhood Education, and Library and Information Science.
The second aspect deals with research studies, seminars and workshops, as well as short-term in-service programmes for practising teachers.
In order to further enhance the work of the Institute, there is a Journal of Educational Studies-Benin Journal of Educational Studies (BJES). The journal welcomes articles in all fields of human endeavour, however the articles should be related to the school child, educational systems and the school environment. In addition, the articles must be relevant to contemporary educational issues and practice.

The organizational structure of the Institute is such that at the apex is a Governing Board and a number of sub-committees that codify its operations. On the spot is the Director of the Institute who is assisted by three Divisional Heads to wit:
(a)    Head of the Division of Teacher Education
(b)    Head of the Division of Education Services; and
(c)    Head of the Division of Research and Publications

The Educational Services Division is concerned with providing professional services to institutions, organizations and bodies, which require the support of the vast expert knowledge available in the Institute. Such services include the development and monitoring of educational programmes for affiliated institutions, the moderation of examinations in accordance with set standards; the conduct of  research on behalf of clients/organizations and the conduct of seminars, workshops and conferences. Schools and organizations are encouraged to request the Institute of Education to organize workshops, seminars and conferences in areas of interest to them in line with one of the mandate of the university-community development.

The Teacher Education Division is responsible for the coordination of Teacher Education programmes in the Institute of Education. The activities carried out by the Division include the development or revision of programmes.

The Research Division is responsible for the coordination of research related activities, group research and publications. One of its main achievements has been the continuous publication of the Benin Journal of Education Studies (BJES) and other occasional publications.
