The Institute of Public Administration and Extension Services, University of Benin was established to serve as a management centre of excellence from which administration and managerial expertise in the health, socio-economic and administrative Areas could be made available to the Nigerian public and interested organization in particular and the African region in general.

The Institute which offers courses that lead to pre-degree and postgraduate Certificates started in the 1978-79 academic year. It added the Diploma in Health Administration and Management (DHAM), Diploma in Health Statistics and Primary Health Care (DHSPHC) both in the Health Management area. Other programs being offered are: the Certificate in Public Administration (CPA), the Diploma in Public Administration (DPA), Advance Diploma in Health Care Financing and Management (ADHFM), the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDPA), and the Master degree in Health Planning and Management (MHPM) run in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.

The overall administration and academic work of the Institution is managed, coordinated and supervised by a Director who is directly responsible to the Vice Chancellor of the University. The Director is assisted in the day-to-day management of the Institute by a secretary and several boards and committees.The Institute is structured into three Divisions: Administrative Studies, Health Management Studies, and Extension Services.

Dr. (Mrs.) R.I. Ogbimi is the Acting Director of the Institute. She is assisted by Divisional Heads and Institute Secretary, Barr. Emmanual Akpologun, a Principal Assistant Registrar.
