Dr Sophia Ijeoma Akhuemokhanwas born 23rd April 1958 at Oxford, England. Her academic career commenced as Graduate Assistant at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1982-83). She worked at the teaching Service, Edo State, as Master 1 and Principal from 1985 to 1994. She joined University of Benin in March 1994 and rose to the position of Senior Lecturer since 2006.
Dr Akhuemokhan has taught several courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has published extensively in national and international journals. Her most recent papers have appeared in Ariel, African Literature Today, Legon Journal of the Humanities, and Neohelicon. She specialises in prose fiction.
Her administrative profile extends to boards and committees in the department, faculty, university and the community. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Romanus Egudu Journal of English Studies (a publication of the Department of English and Literature) and the Editor, Journal of the Literary Society of Nigeria. She is married with three children.
